Berlin

If you tend to enjoy what UNESCO names World Heritage sites? if you are looking for artsy, over the top or one of a kind Berlin will assuredly be what your looking for! Berlin is a city that can deliver the best of both worlds. Berlin, Germany’s capital, dates to the 13th century. Reminders of the city’s turbulent 20th-century history include its Holocaust memorial and the Berlin Wall’s graffitied remains. Divided during the Cold War, its 18th-century Brandenburg Gate has become a symbol of reunification. The city’s also known for its art scene and modern landmarks like the gold-colored, swoop-roofed Berliner Philharmonie, built in 1963.

When To Visit

Berlin is a year-round destination, getting busiest May-Oct and Dec. Key events include Carnival of Cultures (May) with a parade and music, Berlin Pride Celebration (Jun) and the Bierfestival. In Nov and Dec, Berlin has Christmas Markets and a New Year’s Eve street party by the Brandenburg Gate. Fall and winter (Oct-Mar) in Berlin can be gray with rain, sleet and snow.

10 Unique Things To See and Do in Berlin

1. Take a dip at Liquidrom. A futuristic German spa housed in an odd tent shaped structure that looks to be straight out of a science fiction novel, and the hi-tech delights within don’t disappoint either. Visitors can float in a pool of salt water while zoning out to underwater techno.

2. Take a tour of Berliner Unterwelten (Subterranean Berlin). A bunker was cleared, reconstructed, and transformed into a museum while maintaining its original character. Hiding on four floors below Berlin are dozens of bunkers, tunnels, walkways, canals, the route of a pneumatic postal system, storage rooms, bomb and ammunition storage, and abandoned subway stations used to smuggle people out of East Germany.

3 Eat a Currywurst. Currywurst is a hot sausage cut in slices with ketchup and seasoned with curry powder. Invented in 1949 by Herta Heuwer in Berlin, it’s Germany’s most popular fast food. So where will you find the best one? Consider this your own personal challenge. We read Konnopke’s in Prenzlauer Berg is the best but just eat your way through Berlin and you will find your favorite!

4.Spend some time on the water. Surprisingly, Berlin has more bridges than Venice! And there’s not only the Spree river, there are many more like the Havel or the Panke. In addition, there are about 70 lakes in and around Berlin. So take a boat trip, go for a swim or drink a fancy cocktail in one of the many beach bars.

We suggest;

Patio-Docked at Bärenbrücke in Moabit, it’s the city’s only restaurant on a ship, with a terrace perfect for evening cocktails. Its fine-dining dishes range from entrecôte to lamb, but there are also veggie options like provincial lasagna or risotto, too.

Badeschiff- One of the most unique clubs in Berlin, Badeschiff is an outdoor beach bar that features a pool… in a river. Once you pay a small entry fee, you’re free to roam the beach, roof, or have a dip in the pool. During the summer months, there’s plenty of room to lounge around and tan, but you’ll often find DJs and dance parties here, too.

5. Take a stroll thru the East Side Gallery. It is the world’s longest open air gallery. After the fall of the Berlin Wall many famous artists immortalized themselves and the wall itself through a piece of art never seen before. Over 100 paintings such as the famous kiss of Erich Honecker and Leonid Brezhnev can be seen here on a more than one kilometer long, still intact original section of the Berlin Wall.

6. Kurfurstendamm- Berliners just call it “Ku’Damm” and on this avenue, you can shop till you drop. If you need anything, you will find it here. And if not here just go around the corner to the “KaDeWe”, short for Kaufhaus des Westens. It’s Europe’s biggest mall with a gourmet section as large as 7,000 square meters. At Ku’damm you can also see the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, in German the Gedachtniskirche, which’s ruins still remain since World War II.

7.Water Plane Ride– Berlin is the only capital in the world where a water plane is allowed to take off. And it’s red. And you can book a champagne-flight. And you can see the whole city from up in the air. And hey, who doesn’t wanna fly in a water plane?

8. Base Flying-The best way to thrill yourself in Berlin. From the top of the Park Inn Hotel you can pay to experience an 8 second, 125 meter free fall, that comes with an extraordinary view of the Berlin TV tower, head over heels.

9. Stay somewhere uniquely Berlin. A few of our suggestions for a true Berlin experience;
